Feng Gensheng

A man of the Han ethnicity, he was born in 1934 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Feng Gensheng was born into a Chinese pharmaceutical family of three generations' standing. At the age of fourteen he entered Huqingyutang and took the veteran pharmaceutical worker Han Dongnan as his teacher, becoming the last closed-door disciple admitted to Huqingyutang before the founding of the People's Republic of China. Feng Gensheng's unusual path from apprentice to head of the house made him both an inheritor of the tradition of Chinese pharmacy and a pioneer in its modernization. He fully mastered the skills of procuring medicinal materials, formulating decoction pieces, processing Chinese medicinals, and preparing finished Chinese medicines; in particular, he possessed consummate mastery of the traditional preparations with distinctive Huqingyutang characteristics, such as the Hu family anti-pestilence elixir (Hu Shi Piwen Dan), the Purple Snow Elixir (Zixue Dan), and the Immediate-Cure Elixir (Lima Huiding Dan). After becoming factory director in the 1970s, Feng Gensheng pioneered placental blood gamma globulin, the first biological product in China's Chinese-pharmaceutical industry, and Shengmai Injection, a Chinese-medicine intravenous injection, and facilitated the export of China's first set of Chinese medicinal extraction equipment. Feng Gensheng passed the art of Chinese pharmacy on from generation to generation, bringing up a large cohort of capable pharmaceutical workers.
Honors & Recognition
A national representative bearer of Huqingyutangzhongyaowenhua, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Feng Gensheng is a recipient of the national 'May Day' Labor Medal, a national model worker, and a model worker of the national medical and pharmaceutical system; he was among the first cohort of outstanding entrepreneurs of the nation and a delegate to the Thirteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China; and he has received such honorary titles as China Master of Management, National Outstanding Management Talent, and Outstanding Entrepreneur of the National Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry.
