Dharma name Shi Baohua, male, Han ethnicity, born in April 1960, a native of Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. He is currently abbot of Bifeng Temple in the eastern suburbs of Meijiang District, Meizhou, and a Xianghua monk of the Zong generation of the Hengshan Hall branch of Meizhou Hakka Xianghua Buddhism. Influenced by his father and elders from childhood, he loved and was absorbed in the mat lion dance performed in Xianghua Buddhist rites, and from the age of seven he often practised standing, squatting and straddling techniques with his father. At fifteen he became a disciple of Shi Zhanglong and Shi Danhua, studying the content of the Xianghua Buddhist rites and the performance techniques of Xianghua Chan instruments assiduously, and after completing his training at nineteen he continued to study them in depth. He has mastered the various highly difficult techniques of the mat lion and, while retaining the original form of a single monk playing with a single lion, developed the form of a single monk playing with three lions. His mat lion performance is remarkably true to life, with a fierce bearing, agile leaps and free rolling.
Honors & Recognition
A national representative bearer of Lion Dance (Mat Lion Dance), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Over more than forty years as a performer he has taken part in various performances in China and abroad and won several awards, and he has taught several dozen disciples.
