Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Yao, born in June 1964 in Nandan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Combining the roles of skin drummer and lead dancer, he is the soul of the entire dance; drumming and dancing at once, he can mimic with striking fidelity the monkey's movements of climbing branches, picking fruit and throwing objects, his dancing brisk and nimble, firm and supple in due measure, rough-hewn and archaic, retaining the traditional movements while adding his own characteristics and bringing the monkey's spirit fully to life. He has several times travelled within China and abroad as a skin drum director to perform, publicise and compete in Qinzegela, a transliteration of a Yao phrase meaning beating the old monkey. He has many disciples, several of whom have mastered the essentials of the Nandan Qinzegela technique and serve as directors.
