Lineage & School of Heritage
From childhood he studied the Ula Chen Hanjun Banner Single Drum Dance under his father Zhang Zhonghua; at the age of seven he began taking part in the shamanic sacrifices of the family, and at sixteen he became the eighth-generation great shaman of the Zhang lineage and the eighth-generation bearer of the Ula Chen Hanjun Banner Single Drum Dance.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Manchu ethnic group, born in March 1976, a native of Jilin City, Jilin Province. For many years he has devoted himself to recovering, collating, transmitting and refining the dance technique of the Ula Chen Hanjun Banner Single Drum Dance. In particular, in such single-drum dances as Releasing the Eagle Spirit and Striking the Five Routes he has fully inherited the distinctive skills and primal religious beliefs of his forebears, winning the praise of his kinsmen and the affection of local audiences, and he has taken part in many exhibition performances organized within China.
Honors & Recognition
A representative bearer of the Drum Dance (Ula Chen Hanjun Banner Single Drum Dance), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In recent years he has regularly carried out transmission training and exhibition performances, training ninth-generation bearers, extending the influence of the Ula Chen Hanjun Banner Single Drum Dance and bringing this fine traditional culture to wider attention.
