Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han ethnic group, born in March 1944, a native of Shanghe County, Shandong Province. He learned the flower-whip drum dance from childhood and developed a distinctive style of his own. He can wield a flower whip more than a chi long in each hand at the same time, executing more than thirty postures, among them the sparrowhawk's turn, the carp leaping the dragon gate, the ancient tree striking root, Su Qin carrying his sword and the golden-silk gourd. The tip of the whip strikes the center of the drumhead to produce various ornamental figures and a crisp, resounding sound that lifts the spirits of all who hear it. He has also reworked and re-created the dance, so that the flower-whip drum has advanced considerably in its drum patterns, its whip-wielding postures and its leg movements. He regularly teaches dance skills to the young people of his village and organizes teams to take part in municipal and county folk art performances, making the flower-whip drum a form of performance that people delight in.
