Lineage & School of Heritage

A fourteenth-generation transmitter of the Qilin Dance, he studied under Song Wansheng.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han ethnic group, born in April 1949, a native of Lankao County, Henan Province. A consummate performer whose movements are crisp and clean, he is known as the living qilin. In the early 1960s, when Lankao County was in severe difficulties and many people left home to beg, he urged his kinsmen to hold their ground, working the land and practicing the qilin dance so that it would not be lost. For decades he has persisted in transmitting it, teaching the skills of flashing, turning, rearing and shifting to one group of pupils after another; the lineage has now reached the sixteenth generation, and the qilin dance has been passed on from one generation to the next.
