Shi Qing
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in September 1962, a native of Yun County, Hubei Province. Immersed in folk art from childhood, he received instruction from veteran folk artists while learning the phoenix lantern dance and inherited their authentic tradition. Diligent in study and assiduous in practice, he acquired through years of artistic experience a firm command of the "shizi" (cross-pattern) mnemonic handed down by his teachers and of the essentials of performing with hand, eye, body, method and step, rendering the phoenix's postures and movements with striking fidelity. In more than thirty years as a performer he has taken part in over a hundred exhibitions and performances at national, provincial and municipal levels, and has coached and trained more than thirty core bearers of the phoenix lantern dance, becoming a leading figure of the Yunyang phoenix lantern dance.
