Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Dai ethnicity, born in February 1962, a native of Mengla County, Yunnan Province. From childhood he had a keen interest in the Dai elephant-foot drum dance and in martial arts. At the age of eight he became a pupil of Yan Wangdan of his village and learned the elephant-foot drum dance. He ingeniously incorporates Dai martial arts into the elephant-foot drum dance, embodying the union of hardness and softness in martial art and dance, and has formed a distinctive repertoire of his own. By about the age of twenty he had become a locally well-known elephant-foot drum dancer. In 1999 he studied the craft of making elephant-foot drums under Botao Wanxianggangna, a veteran artist of Mangangna Village in Mengla Town, becoming a "drum king" of the elephant-foot drum dance who can both make drums and dance.
