Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Hani ethnicity, born in December 1955, a native of Jianshui County, Yunnan Province. Influenced by his elders from childhood, in 1975 he formally became a disciple of the renowned Mang drum dance artist Cao Defa, studying the Mang drum dance comprehensively and systematically, and became the principal dancer in the Mang drum dance performed in worship of the sacred tree. His dance movements are archaic and profound, rugged and uninhibited, with a novel rhythm, and are highly infectious. He has appeared in large-scale events including the Yunnan Provincial Ethnic Arts and Culture Festival, the Fourth National Ethnic Minorities Traditional Sports Games, the Third China Art Festival and the Shanghai World Expo. From the 1990s to the present he has taken many disciples to pass on the Mang drum dance technique, and has carried out transmission teaching in local primary and secondary schools.
