Male, Han ethnicity, born in October 1930; his ancestral home is Baoding, Hebei Province, and he was born in Shen County, Hebei. He is a National First-Class Director. In 1942 he was admitted to the Xiasheng Drama School, and later joined the cultural work troupe of the Third Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army together with the school, before being merged with the troupe into the East China Experimental Peking Opera Company and then the Shanghai Peking Opera Company. In 1955 he was recommended for admission to the Directing Department of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and in 1958 he returned to the Shanghai Peking Opera Company as a director, staging more than eighty productions in a dozen or more genres, including the Peking operas Hongse Fengbao (Red Storm), Hai Rui Shang Shu (Hai Rui Submits a Memorial), Pan Si Dong (The Cave of the Silken Web) and Cao Cao and Yang Xiu, the Yueju opera Xiyuan Ji (Record of the Western Garden), the Cantonese opera Chao Zhang Chao Luo (Rising and Falling Tides) and the Huangmei opera Hong Lou Meng (Dream of the Red Chamber). In long years of practice he has combined the traditional Chinese opera performance system with Western theatre systems, giving prominence to the native substance of Chinese opera and forming a distinctive directorial style. His production Cao Cao and Yang Xiu has been acclaimed as a landmark work of Chinese opera in the new era.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of Peking Opera, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. His works have repeatedly won the Five One Project Award. In 2015 he received the Special Contribution Award of the 25th Shanghai Magnolia Drama Performing Arts Awards.
