Xu Shengjiu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1926 in Xingguo, Jiangxi. From childhood he was fond of singing mountain songs. In 1947 he took the folk artist Zhu Xianzhao as his teacher and studied Tiaoxi, the jumping-sorcerer performance that integrates the drawing of talismans and the chanting of incantations, the guessing of flowers with sung responses, and mountain song singing; thus he began his career as a professional singer. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he traveled with the county and township amateur mountain-song troupes to sing in the villages, continuing without interruption until the age of eighty, and he taught many inheritors of mountain songs. His performance combines song and dance, with men dressed as women, improvised singing, and vivid images. His voice is loud and clear, and he has developed his own distinctive artistic style. He has been named an Excellent Singer at the county mountain song arena competition on many occasions.
