Lineage & School of Heritage

A fourth-generation transmitter of Nanyan Luantan. At the age of thirteen he studied in his home village of Dongnanyan, Wancheng Township, Gaoyi County, at the Tianxingkui Luantan troupe, specializing in the wusheng (martial male) role type.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, of Han ethnicity, born in September 1937 in Gaoyi County, Hebei Province. In 1954 he became a disciple of Shi Fengyun, a Luantan performer from Julu who was the favoured pupil of Wu Faxu (styled Laozhen), the second-generation artist on record in Hebei Luantan. He later accompanied his master to perform with the Rixin Luantan Troupe in Gaocheng. In 1956 he returned to Nanyan village and founded the Qunying Luantan Troupe. His singing was distinctive: he created a laosheng high-register hualian style of delivery, and his sustained phrases often ended on a falling final note. He commanded the plots of several dozen plays, and on the basis of his recollections the troupe compiled and published the Nanyan Luantan Script Series.

Honors & Recognition

A national representative bearer of Luantan (Nanyan Luantan), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He passed the art of Luantan on to the next generation without reservation, teaching by word of mouth and by example, and trained a cohort of young performers for the troupe.
