Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A woman of Han ethnicity, she was born in April 1963 in Zhuji County, Zhejiang Province. She is a National First-Class Actor. In 1979 she was admitted to the Zhuji County Yueju Opera Troupe, specializing in the xiaosheng (young male) role. In 1983 she became a disciple of the renowned Yueju performer Xu Yulan. In 1986 she joined the Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre and became one of its principal actresses. Her acting is particularly adept at probing the psychology of her characters. Her voice is high, bright and clear, and she has inherited almost the entire repertoire of the Xu school, attaining a likeness in both outward form and inner spirit. Her representative works include the traditional Yueju operas Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Western Chamber, Chasing the Fish, Xi Shi Returns to Yue, The Purple Jade Hairpin, The Real and the False Prince Consort, Crying and Laughing Fate, The Jade Hairpin, The Severed Finger and Stage Sisters, as well as the newly adapted Yueju operas Dream of the Red Chamber, The White-Robed Prime Minister and Han Feizi.
