Wu Zhihui
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1939 in Zhongshan, Guangdong. He began singing xianshuige (salt-water songs) at the age of sixteen. In 1958, together with fellow singers Liang Sanmei and He Fuyou, he recorded his first vinyl disc. In 1962 he joined the Tanzhou Folk Song Choir. In 1994 and 2004 his renditions of xianshuige were included in the CD gold disc and the MTV production of Zhongshan Folk Songs. His tone is high and expansive, and he excels at antiphonal singing between men and women; his outstanding tenor expresses to the full the lingering, resonant charm of xianshuige. His representative works include Dui Hua (Antiphonal Flower Song) and Gu Mei Ge (Song of the Younger Sister).
