Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, of Han ethnicity, born in August 1952 in Taigu County, Shanxi Province. Fond of yangge from childhood, he was admitted at the age of 25 to the Taigu County Yangge Opera Troupe, where he studied singing under Wang Xiaoduan, whose stage name was Xiang Man Dan, and acting under Wang Zhenji, whose stage name was Xiao Hama Chou (Little Toad Clown), specializing in the chou comic role. Over decades on the stage he has created lifelike clown characters in hundreds of classic Taigu yangge plays. Drawing on his own understanding of art and of life, he brings every shade of the clown role to vivid realization. His representative plays include Da Tiao Cai (Picking Greens), Tou Nangua (Stealing Pumpkins) and Jie Qinjia (Welcoming the In-Laws). For many years he has worked to cultivate talent and has actively promoted local opera in schools, lecturing teachers and students on Qitai yangge; in his spare time he often passes on vocal and acting skills to amateur troupes and yangge enthusiasts, benefiting more than two hundred devotees.
