Liu Yongbin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Tujia ethnicity, born in 1941 in Shizhu, Chongqing. A peasant singer. From childhood he learned to sing Tujia luoerdiao from his parents, his elder brothers and sisters and his neighbours, displaying a fine artistic gift: he never forgot a tune once heard, and his understanding was quick. He went on to study such traditional folk arts as Haocao Luogu (weeding gong and drum), Daoqin, Che Deng (lantern dance) and Jinqianban (coin-clapper ballads), and is a man of many talents. He has particularly high attainment in Tujia luoerdiao, singing about whatever he sees and improvising the words as he goes; his singing is full of genuine feeling, and locally he is acclaimed as the "King of Tujia Song". Visitors from the United States, Britain, Japan, Thailand and elsewhere often came expressly to hear him sing Tujia luoerdiao, and he received more than four thousand visitors in all. For many years he has devoted himself to transmitting Tujia luoerdiao and has taken on several dozen apprentices. His representative works include Taiyang Chulai Xi Yangyang (The Sun Comes Out and All Is Joy), Jinyin Hua'er Kai (Golden and Silver Flowers Bloom) and Shanli Meizi Shang Jie Lai (The Mountain Girl Comes to Town).
