Male, Han ethnicity, born in August 1939 in Luan County, Hebei Province. In 1957 he joined the Luan County Shadow Puppet Society to study the xiaodan (young female) role of shadow puppetry, and in 1958 he was admitted to the Tangshan Prefectural Experimental Shadow Puppet Society, where he took the renowned veteran shadow puppeteer Fang Chunrong as his teacher and afterwards studied under Gao Rongjie as well. In 1979 he became deputy head of the Tangshan Shadow Puppet Troupe. He specializes in the xiaodan role of shadow puppetry and is also accomplished in the qingyi (virtuous female), huadan (lively female) and daomadan (martial female) roles, drawing together the strengths of his predecessors into a distinctive singing style. He is able to create colourful character images of different temperaments and different emotions. In the daomadan role, as with Shao Yulan in Shao Yulan Rescues Her Husband, his pitch is high and ringing, crisp and neat, with considerable force; in the qingyi role, as with the Princess in The Princess Instructs Her Son, he is steady and dignified, his singing rising and falling with clearly marked layers; and in the huadan role, as with Xiaoqing in The Legend of the White Snake, his singing is cheerful and lively, crisp and exquisite.
