Lineage & School of Heritage

At the age of 18 she began studying under the artist Li Jinzhong, and after the age of 20 she began performing with the Li family troupe.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, Han ethnicity, born in December 1970 in Bairin Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. She is skilled in singing a range of role types in shadow puppetry, including the sheng (male), xiao (young female) and chou (comic) roles, and is especially adept at manipulating the shadow figures. Besides traditional plays, she has performed newly written full-length historical shadow plays such as Twin Stars of the Great Liao and The Legend of Liao Taizu, the short shadow play for peasant audiences Saying What Is in Us Farmers' Hearts, and campus textbook plays such as Lu Tixia Thrashes Zhen Guanxi in the Market and Winning the Championship in a Contest. She takes an active part in building village cultural rooms and in bringing shadow puppetry into the spare-time cultural life of farmers and herders.

Honors & Recognition

Representative bearer of Shadow Puppetry (Bairin Left Banner Shadow Puppetry), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2015 she took part in the national shadow puppetry exhibition and performance held in Kaifeng, Henan, and won a gold award. In 2014 she was appointed as an instructor in shadow puppetry at Huaxia Vocational School, where she has taken in more than twenty students as disciples and carefully passed on the skills of manipulating shadow figures and of singing and recitation in shadow puppetry. She has on many occasions led her disciples to take part in shadow puppetry exhibitions and special performances.
