Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Han ethnicity, born in May 1943 in Anguo County, Hebei Province. Over more than fifty years in the art she has given more than ten thousand performances, singing throughout the central and southern regions of Hebei. Since her retirement in 1993 she has continued to perform publicly and to coach with the various Laodiao artistic groups in the county. Handsome in appearance on stage, she specializes in the xiaosheng (young male) and laosheng (older male) roles and also performs female roles in reverse casting, including qingyi, huadan and caidan, displaying a wide range and enjoying great popularity. Her singing is high-pitched and stirring, fluent and unaffected; her natural voice, her supported back voice and her second voice blend seamlessly, being both broad and bright and pure in pitch. Whichever voice she uses, it never cracks or trembles, and her diction is clear and her tones round, so that she fully inherits the singing style of the Western-route Laodiao master Liu Shouqian. Her representative works include Ode to the Long River, Xiaochenzhuang (also known as Seizing the Seal), Fanning the Stove and Hu Yanqing at the Tournament.
