Wang Haiyan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Han ethnicity, born in January 1975 in Changzhi County, Shanxi Province. Fond of drum balladry from childhood, at fifteen she became a disciple of the folk artist Wang Kuihua and learned to sing with his troupe; at eighteen she completed her training, formed a company under her own name and began touring. Her voice is distinctive and her singing rich and mellow with a lingering resonance. She moves in and out of narrative roles without a trace, and her stage manner is plain and unadorned, combining voice and feeling to moving effect, so that she preserves the traditional character of Lu'an Dagu. Her signature piece Ge Rou Huan Niang (Cutting Flesh to Repay One's Mother) won high praise and first prize at the sixth China Quyi Peony Award national quyi competition. She has trained five young performers and given more than ten thousand performances across dozens of counties where Shanxi, Hebei and Henan meet. She has collected and organised nearly one hundred traditional Lu'an Dagu titles, and took part in compiling A Chronology of Fu Huaizhu's Quyi Creations and A Chronicle of Quyi in Changzhi County.
