Lineage & School of Heritage

In 1961 he became a pupil of Li Qizheng; in 1973 he joined the Li County quyi troupe, working with the cultural centre to reform Gupenge.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han ethnicity, born in December 1947 in Li County, Hunan Province. He is a member of the China Quyi Artists Association. After the 1980s he moved Gupenge, which had previously been performed only in mourning halls, into quyi teahouses, broadening its market. From 2007 he began editing four traditional songbooks of Lizhou Dagu: Wu Nü Xi Tang (Five Women Fool About in the Tang Court), Tian Kai Bang (The Heavenly Ranking), Baima Tuo Shi (The White Horse Carries the Corpse) and Shuang He Yin (The Double Seal). He also prepared nearly ten modern songbooks, including Tongguan Ci (The Words for Passing the Pass) and Huangli Mi (The Almanac Addict). He has a good voice and clear diction; his rhythm is fast without falling into confusion and slow without slackening, and he gives full play to humour and satire. Each year he holds one or two training courses to pass his skills on to younger performers.

Honors & Recognition

He is a national representative bearer of Gupenge, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He takes part year in and year out in quyi performances for the benefit of the public, and his works have won awards many times.
