At the age of twelve he was admitted to the quyi class of the Ningbo School of Traditional Opera, where he learned to sing siming nanci and also studied yangqin accompaniment under Chai Binzhang and Yu Changshou.

Male, Han ethnicity, born in September 1947 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. He has a thorough command of siming nanci singing and instrumental accompaniment, is especially accomplished on the yangqin, and possesses the rare skill of making a fixed score live in performance. He has compiled and published two monographs and has collected and preserved a body of precious material on this musical genre. He has organized performance teams to carry out transmission activities and is known for performing traditional items such as Zhen Zhu Ta (The Pearl Pagoda) and Yu Qing Ting (The Jade Dragonfly). He has opened classes in schools to teach the art and has trained young performers who form the backbone of performance.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of siming nanci, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2009 he was named one of the first batch of outstanding folk literary and art talents of Zhejiang Province by the Publicity Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and other bodies.
