Lineage & School of Heritage

In 1949 he entered the Comic Training Class (Huaji Xunlian Ban) founded by Yang Xiaofeng, studying there and taking Yang as his master. He inherited the lineage of Yao and Zhou, known for its warm, affable banter and its literary refinement, and absorbed the humorous comic manner of Zhu Xiangfei together with the sparkling repartee of Yuan Yiling, gradually forming a style of his own.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

He held the rank of National First-Class Actor. In 1951 he joined the Bee Comic Troupe (Mifeng Huaji Jutuan) and took Yao Mushuang and Zhou Bochun as his masters. In 1960 the troupe was incorporated into the comic troupe of the Shanghai People's Art Theatre. He passed on fifteen exemplary pieces of the dujiao opera repertoire and created more than eighty new ones, and he explored the writing and performance of eulogistic dujiao opera; pieces such as Singing Mountain Songs (Chang Shan Ge) and The Exquisite Pagoda (Linglong Ta) became enduring classics of the genre. He taught courses in comic performance at the training class for comic actors jointly run by the Shanghai Comic Troupe and the Shanghai Opera School.

Honors & Recognition

Born in July 1934 in Ninghai County, Zhejiang Province, he died in May 2021. He was of Han ethnicity. He was a national representative bearer of Dujiao Opera, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2018 the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles conferred on him the honorary title of Quyi Artist of Lifetime Achievement of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
