Ye Jishu
Lineage & School of Heritage
In 1958 she joined the Chongqing Quyi Troupe, and in 1960 she studied Sichuan yangqin under Li Deyuan.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Born in October 1945 in Chongqing, she is of Han ethnicity. She held the rank of National Second-Class Actor. She devoted herself to studying the vocal styles of the leading yangqin masters of Sichuan and Chongqing and drew on the essence of Peking opera, Henan opera, Sichuan opera and Huangmei opera. She could shift her voice to portray several characters on her own, her male roles firm and her female roles tender, with a delicate and emotionally expressive manner. In this way she enriched the coloratura (huachang) techniques of Sichuan yangqin and formed a distinctive performing style. Her representative pieces include Xianglian Storms the Palace (Xianglian Chuang Gong), Killing Xi in the North Tower (Bei Lou Sha Xi), Visiting Relatives (Tan Qin) and Baoyu Mourns at the Spirit Tablet (Baoyu Ku Ling).
Honors & Recognition
She is a national representative bearer of Sichuan Yangqin, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2002, The Lamp of the Foggy City (Wudu Mingdeng), in which she performed, won the Tenth Wenhua Award for New Plays. In 2007, The Narcissus in the Moonlight (Yueguang Xia de Shuixian), in which she performed, received a nomination for outstanding production in the National Stage Art Excellence Project jointly implemented by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance.
