Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Born in October 1944 in Qingjian County, Shaanxi Province, he is of Han ethnicity. He loved Shanbei daoqing from childhood and is renowned in his home region as a king of song and as an umbrella head (santou) in yangge. His melodies draw on and absorb musical elements from Qinqiang, Meihu, Wanwanqiang and northern Shaanxi folk songs; his singing is high-pitched and bright, fervent and unrestrained. His movements in performance are light and lively, relaxed and expansive, and rich in variation. His representative pieces include Mao Hong Leaps the Wall (Mao Hong Tiao Qiang), One Hundred Thousand in Gold (Shiwan Jin), Riot at the Study (Nao Shuguan) and Daoqing of Liberation (Fanshen Daoqing), and he has released an MTV album of northern Shaanxi folk songs under his own name. He has persisted year-round in carrying out Shanbei daoqing transmission activities; three Shanbei daoqing teaching institutes have now been established, and he has coached more than five hundred enthusiasts. His more than forty disciples include Hui Donglian, Bai Yanling, Bai Fengjie, Wu Yanling and He Shiwu.
