Lineage & School of Heritage

She is a third-generation transmitter of the Xing style (Xing Qiang) of the pinghou flat-voice register in Cantonese yuequ, and a disciple of Li Shaofang, who was herself a direct pupil of the Little Star (Xiao Mingxing, Deng Manwei). She has studied with many distinguished teachers and drawn widely on their strengths.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Born in October 1931 in Panyu County, Guangdong Province, she is of Han ethnicity. She held the rank of National First-Class Actor. Her singing not only captures both outward form and inner spirit with strong expressive power, but also breaks new ground. She has used the Xing style to portray contemporary life, breathing new vitality into a traditional vocal idiom. From the 1950s onward she has continually taken on disciples and passed on her art in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, teaching by word of mouth and by personal example with tireless dedication; a high proportion of her disciples have matured, and many have become yuequ singers active on the concert stage.

Honors & Recognition

She is a national representative bearer of Yuequ, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
