02 · Mastery & Signature Works

Male, Han ethnicity, born in February 1951 in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. The puppet heads he makes present a rich range of images, with delicate construction, graceful forms, harmonious colour schemes and beautiful ornamentation, and are remarkably lifelike. Beyond his devotion to production, he has also committed himself to training successors. Within the documented technical tradition of Puppet Head Carving in Quanzhou, Fujian: Quanzhou puppet heads are treasured folk artworks much loved the world over; puppet-head carving derives from traditional carving of puppets and divine images. Quanzhou has produced many skilled carvers over its history; among them, Jiang Jiazou, who rose to prominence in the first half of the 20th century, is a modern master carver who carried the past forward and opened the way to the future. Jiang Jiazou (1871–1954), courtesy name Changqing, was a native of Fengze District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province; his father, Jiang Jinbang, was a folk artisan who carved pastel-painted puppet heads. Jiang Jiazou began learning the craft from his father at the age of eleven and inherited the trade at eighteen; he developed and created 285 types of puppet heads of differing character, 250 of which had specific names, and also made more than ten styles of topknots and braids. From then on, Jiang Jiazou explored diligently in the field of puppet-head carving for many years; over his lifetime he carved more than ten thousand pastel-painted puppet heads. Through keen observation and careful study of human images, Jiang Jiazou summarized a law of puppet carving: he held that beauty or ugliness, loyalty or treachery, worthiness or folly, and the expressions of joy, anger, sorrow, and delight all produce complex variations in the “five features” — eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and eyebrows — and the “three bones” — the brow bone, cheekbones, and chin bone. By summarizing, exaggerating, and distorting the bone and muscle structure of the face according to the plot and the character's personality, he could turn motionless puppet heads into lifelike figures of distinct character. Jiang Jiazou's puppet heads are a perfect union of carving and pastel painting. His works, with subtle brushwork, consummate carving, and a refined knife technique, display beautiful forms, rich imagery, rigorous structure, precise carving, harmonious colors, handsome painted patterns, lively stage appearance, and endless charm; they are rare treasures in which carving and painting combine perfectly. The puppet-head carving and pastel-painting techniques of Jiang Jiazou involve complex procedures done purely by hand, offer limited income, and require a long period of study that most young people find hard to accept; inheritors can therefore only be chosen from among the master's own children.
