Wang Dengshu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Miao ethnicity, born in March 1968 in Huangping County, Guizhou Province. In his early teens he became a pupil of Wu Guoqing, a well-known local maker of Miao clay whistles, and soon became familiar with and fully mastered the techniques and essentials of making them. His works cover a wide range of subjects; their forms are flexible and varied, their colours bright and lively, and their lines fine and graceful, giving them a strong stylistic character and high value for artistic appreciation. In modelling the twelve zodiac animals he pays particular attention to the heads, with exaggerated forms that capture the spirit while keeping the shape abbreviated; the pieces are exquisitely made, plain and endearing, with a strong ethnic character. He makes more than one hundred types of clay whistle, and in recent years they have been exhibited many times in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
