Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1938 in Nantong, Jiangsu. He came from a family of artists and learned the qin from childhood under his father Liu Songqiao, a celebrated painter of traditional Chinese painting and a qin player; by the age of eight he could already perform such pieces as Feng Lei Yin (The Wind and Thunder Dirge) and Ping Sha Luo Yan (Wild Geese Descending on the Sandbank) with ease. He later studied under Xu Lisun, grand master of the Zhucheng school, received his authentic transmission, and inherited that school's entire repertoire. In 1958 he was admitted to the guqin programme of the Chinese Music Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; after graduating he taught at the Anhui Provincial Art College and was later transferred to the province's song and dance troupe to perform on the qin. Liu Chicheng possesses profound artistic attainment and a thorough grounding in qin theory; building on tradition while drawing widely on the strengths of others, he formed a personal style that is deep and vigorous, clear and expansive, yet bold and unconstrained. For many years he has devoted himself to the discovery, collation, and transcription of the qin music heritage, accumulating a rich repertoire.
