Zhang Xiaoping, a woman of Han ethnicity, was born in February 1948 in Zigong, Sichuan Province. She is a national representative bearer of tie-dyeing craftsmanship (Zigong tie-dyeing), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She is a Sichuan Provincial Arts and Crafts Master. From 1990 to 1993 she worked in the design office of the Zigong Towel and Bed Sheet Factory, training tie-dyeing technicians. From 1993 to 2006 she engaged in design and production at the Zhang Yuzhong Folk Arts and Crafts Research Institute, where she collected and sorted material on tie-dyeing and built up a body of research on ancient Chinese folk tie-dyeing. Through this research she classified tie-resist (zha-xie) techniques into five major categories and more than one hundred individual methods, and established a distinctive system of resist binding, dyeing, operating procedures and quality standards. She also compiled the volume Zigong Tie-dyeing Craftsmanship, which records in detail several dozen resist techniques and the various dyeing processes used in Zigong tie-dyeing.
