He Deyi
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1953 in Qinyang, Henan. Born into a family of suona players, he belongs to the He school, one of the four great schools of Qinyang suona playing, which has been passed down through six generations. He came into contact with suona art at the age of five and had completely mastered the craft by the age of eighteen. His playing is rough and bold, with ample breath and a rich, sonorous tone that can carry ten li in a single continuous phrase, and at the same time he combines it with the modern soft-technique suona style, whose round, lingering sustained notes leave a long aftertaste; whether he plays with the mouth, the teeth, or the tongue, he attains perfection. His representative works include A Spray of Flowers, Chaoyang Gully, and The Witty Combat.
