Male, Tibetan ethnicity, born in July 1960, a native of Chenduo County, Qinghai Province. He is a national representative bearer of Tibetan Metal Forging Techniques (Tibetan Knife Forging Techniques), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is a technician of Tibetan metal forging. Through constant study and accumulated experience his skill in making Tibetan knives has improved greatly, and his work is known for its authentic quality and strong Tibetan style. Tibetan knife making has been transmitted solely within families; as the craftsmen grow old and the young people of the family are unwilling to learn, the transmission of the Tibetan knife has run into difficulties. In addition, some people use machines to imitate handwork, and the knives produced in this way differ greatly from traditional handmade pieces in their details, hindering the long-term development of Tibetan knife culture.
Honors & Recognition
Gamadaiqing, however, has held to tradition and to authentic transmission while breaking with the former pattern of transmission: he has taken students widely and has trained more than thirty apprentices.
