Lineage & School of Heritage

In 1985 he entered an instrument factory, where he studied the making of Korean ethnic musical instruments under Jin Jifeng.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Korean ethnicity, born in May 1940, a native of Yanji, Jilin Province. He is a national representative bearer of National Musical Instrument Making Techniques (Korean Ethnic Musical Instrument Making Techniques), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is a technician in the making of Korean ethnic musical instruments. In 1959 he began the systematic study of music theory and of instrument performance. By seeking out folk artists and instruments scattered among the people, he mastered the methods of making more than thirty kinds of Korean instruments, and he has attained considerable distinction in the decoration of the gayageum, the improvement of strings, the improvement of drum bodies and the introduction of standardized instrument-making models. He has rescued and recovered the traditional paulownia-wood barrel-bodied long drum and more than twenty related products, and he was the first in China to develop a paulownia-wood long drum, which is now widely used.

Honors & Recognition

In recent years he has mainly trained thirteen craftsmen, all of whom are able to work independently.
