Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han Chinese, born in March 1952 in Xinyang City, Henan Province. He is a national representative bearer of Green Tea Processing Craftsmanship (Xinyang Maojian Tea Processing Craftsmanship), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is a technician in Xinyang Maojian tea processing. Born into a family of tea makers, he began at the age of twelve to learn picking, cultivation and processing from his father, Zhou Jiming. He upholds the Xinyang Maojian processing method handed down in his family, insisting on pan-firing by hand and following the ancestral sequence of steps exactly, with refined technique and a distinctive method. He still keeps the old implements: picking back-baskets, bamboo baskets, shallow drying trays, firewood and charcoal for the stove, fire tongs, iron shovels, the raw-firing wok and the finished-firing wok, large stirring brushes, brooms, bamboo baking baskets, bamboo spreading baskets and ceramic jars for storing tea. To transmit the tradition more effectively, he has trained his eldest son-in-law Xiao Xingliang and his second son-in-law Liu Qiang, and every year he voluntarily teaches tea farmers the knowledge and techniques of Xinyang Maojian cultivation, management and traditional processing.
