Wei Jiequn
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Han Chinese, born in February 1958 in Cangwu County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. She is a national representative bearer of Dark Tea Processing Craftsmanship (Liubao Tea Processing Craftsmanship), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She is a technician in Liubao tea processing. At the age of eighteen she entered the Liubao commune tea factory, learning the craft from her seniors and serving as a technician there. At thirty she returned to her village to make and sell tea, and at forty-five she founded the first Liubao farmhouse tea factory, the Heishishan Tea Factory. Four decades of experience have given her a high level of skill: she can judge by feel the temperature and timing required for firing, balance the pressure of rolling, and roll the leaves into complete strips, forming a craft with distinctive characteristics. Through models such as company plus farming households and cooperatives she supports households that make tea by hand, purchasing local fresh leaves in large quantities and selecting highly skilled people as production workers and technicians in the factory. She demolished the old factory and built a workshop of 1,200 square metres together with an intangible cultural heritage exhibition hall of more than one hundred square metres.
Honors & Recognition
She has focused not only on making tea but also on training successors; in 2009 her daughter Shi Rufei was recognised as a regional-level representative bearer of intangible cultural heritage. Over the past decade the two of them have compiled the family's inherited methods and improved techniques into standard operating manuals, teaching them to a large number of trainees and carrying out standardised training in Liubao farmhouse tea. In 2015 the Heishishan Tea Factory was designated a regional-level demonstration base for the productive protection of intangible cultural heritage.
