曾师从徐涤生学习古筝演奏，先后在汕头地区文工团、汕头市潮州音乐曲艺团工作，1981年任中国音乐学院客座教授，兼任中央音乐学院、中国戏曲学院、西安音乐学院、天津音乐学院等校教师，并赴台湾地区、新加坡、荷兰、比利时等地讲学，培养出大批古筝、琵琶等演奏人才。

其演奏雅尔不矜、丽而不俗、清朗恬淡、意境悠远，多次为中央电视台、中国国际广播电台录制节目，出版《千声佛》等个人CD专辑。

第二批国家级非物质文化遗产项目潮州音乐代表性传承人。
