He Jinxiu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Yao ethnicity, born in August 1965 in Nandan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In 1976 she began learning the techniques of Yao costume making from her grandmother He Yanxing, her maternal grandmother of the Li family and her mother He Damei. She has a thorough command of more than thirty costume-making processes, including spinning and weaving, the gathering and preparation of dyes, dip-dyeing, paste-resist patterning, embroidery and sewing. She is especially skilled in paste-resist patterning and embroidery. The costumes she makes follow the aesthetic conventions of her people: simple and generous, with patterns well spaced and orderly, embodying a plain and genuine artistic style. Over the years she has guided local women in making Yao costume and has opened classes for transmitting Yao costume techniques in primary and secondary schools, cultivating a younger generation of bearers of ethnic costume.
