Liang Zhifu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in July 1971 in Luanping County, Hebei Province. In 1984 he began learning the making and performance techniques of lunhua, the whirling fire-flower display, and being intelligent, diligent and studious he quickly grasped its essentials. In 1990 he formally became a bearer of lunhua and took charge of its making and performance. To make lunhua more performative and visually appealing, he improved the performance apparatus with the help of the older artisans, changing the single flower tube into a double tube and the simple wooden frame into a steel frame fitted with bearings. After repeated experiments he identified birch as the best wood for making charcoal, which increased the volume of fire flowers produced and made the display more spectacular.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of the Lantern Festival (Lunhua Whirling Fire Flowers), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He actively trains successors, and his nephew Liang Haotian has already gained a preliminary command of the techniques of making lunhua.
