Zhou Hehua
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was born in 1938 in Changli, Hebei, and is of Han ethnicity. From the age of fourteen Zhou Hehua studied the performance of diyangge, the local ground yangge, under the Changli diyangge artists Zhou Guobao, Zhang Qian, Qin Huan, Lun Baoshan and other celebrated performers. In 1954 he attended the provincial folk art training course at the Hebei Provincial Art School, where he chiefly studied the "Zhou school" clown dance of his uncle Zhou Guobao while also learning from other schools, absorbing the strengths of each and bringing them into a coherent whole. The diyangge clown roles that Zhou Hehua performs combine firmness with suppleness in a style of his own; his "fan flowers" are endlessly varied and a delight to the eye, and his facial expression is humorous and witty. Even his opening pose is of two kinds, the hard pose, struck on the strong beat, and the soft pose, struck on the weak beat. His representative works include Pao Lü (Running Donkey), Ju Gang (Mending the Vat), Pu Die (Chasing Butterflies), Duan Qiao (The Broken Bridge), Mo Gan (Touching the Pole), Da Zaowang (Teasing the Kitchen God) and Tui Huache (Pushing the Flower Cart).
