Juhongjun
Lineage & School of Heritage
Ju Hongjun began learning to dance yangge in his early teens, studying the role of the "music doctor" under the veteran yangge artist Ju Rong. He was devoted to the popularisation of Haiyang grand yangge and had countless transmitters.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Through constant experiment and self-reflection in practice he absorbed the strengths of many masters, and he further took over the stances and postures of the "Praying Mantis" school of martial arts and fused them into the dance movements of the "music doctor", forming a performance style that is vigorous, composed and of uncommon dignity. His son Ju Jindong, his brother Ju Hongbin, his nephew Ju Weibo and his granddaughter Ju Liping all received his personal instruction. In 1960, at the invitation of the Haiyang Municipal Cultural Centre, he conducted a training class in the "music doctor" role of Haiyang grand yangge.
Honors & Recognition
He was born in 1926 in Haiyang, Shandong, of Han ethnicity, and died in 2008. He was a national representative bearer of Yangge (Haiyang Grand Yangge), a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2004, at the "Garden Cup" Haiyang grand yangge role competition, he demonstrated and promoted the dance movements of the "music doctor" to the public, and he was awarded the title of "Celebrated Yangge Artist" by the organising committee of the Haiyang Grand Yangge Folk Art Festival.
