Lineage & School of Heritage

Because he was only six years old when he began to learn the art and was the sixth child in his family, Liuliu Dan, "Six-Six, the Female Role", became his stage name once he rose to fame.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Li Zengheng began learning to dance yangge at the age of twelve; his first teacher was Yan Wenbin. He is best known for performing the baotou, the female-role lead, in the two-person sequences of northern Shaanxi yangge, dressing as a woman with a pretty appearance and graceful dancing. His "falling soft waist" movement in particular is regarded as unsurpassed, while his "round-field step" is so light and floating that people call it "drifting on water", and he portrays the innocent charm of a young girl to the life. Among the local people there is a saying: "Having seen Liuliu Dan, one goes three days without food; having seen Liuliu walk, it is like drinking strong liquor." His students are to be found throughout the province and beyond, so that his pupils are truly everywhere.

Honors & Recognition

He was born in 1928 in Suide, Shaanxi, of Han ethnicity, and died in 2008. He was a national representative bearer of Yangge (Northern Shaanxi Yangge), a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and held the rank of third-grade national actor.
