Fu Wengang
Lineage & School of Heritage
Fu Wengang studied the art from childhood under his father Fu Shunlu, the sole representative bearer of the zhongfan (large flagpole balancing) specialty of Tianqiao.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1962, a native of Beijing. In order to preserve and promote the Beijing Tianqiao zhongfan, Fu Wengang resolutely resigned from his public post and devoted himself to researching and refining the zhongfan technique, performing continually at the Ditan Temple Fair. The zhongfan stands up to three zhang (about ten meters) tall. When it is whirled it flies up and down, its banners and parasols flutter, and its bronze bells chime; performers often must catch the flying zhongfan with the head, nose, mouth, or teeth. A commentator also adds witty narration matched to the routine being performed, so that the whole act is grand and full of momentum, thrilling and unpredictable, yet humorous and amusing.
