Huang Tingyan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was born in 1941 in Tongliang, Chongqing, and is of Han ethnicity. Huang Tingyan began learning the art at the age of eleven, studying the coloured dragon dance and the playing of gongs and drums under veteran artists such as Shen Junsheng and Zhao Haitao. From 1988, building on the traditional dragon dance, he created a number of dragon dance routines that are both technically demanding and rich in narrative, integrating the wind-and-percussion music of Sichuan opera, its operatic postures and its martial combat sequences into the dragon dance, so that the Tongliang dragon dance became ever more spectacular. In 1994, when the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission listed the dragon dance among the events of competitive sport, the routines he devised, namely the "Great Horizontal Figure-Eight", the "Linked Rings", the "Flying Dragon Chasing the Pearl" and the "Golden Dragon Embracing the Pillar", were recognised as the prescribed routines of dragon dance competition.
