Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1946 in Xiangfen, Shanxi. On the basis of the traditional lion-dance techniques he improved the costumes and props, so that the lion moved more nimbly and its figure became more lifelike; he also reformed the gong-and-drum accompaniment so that it kept close step with the rhythm, mood and movement of the dance. He further developed the solo lion performance into a group lion performance and added elements of martial arts and acrobatics, making the lion dance all the more spectacular. A performer of high skill, Li Dengshan serves as both coach and lion leader and has made an important contribution to the transmission and development of the Tianta lion dance.
