Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1956, a native of Beijing. A representative bearer of Doukongzhu (diabolo spinning), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a diabolo maker. Zhang Guoliang was born into a diabolo-making family. At the age of ten he learned diabolo making from his father and is now one of the few diabolo makers in China, enjoying the reputation of Diabolo Zhang. Diabolos are divided into double-wheel, single-axle, and double-axle types. An ordinary diabolo weighs about 200 to 300 grams and has a diameter of roughly 15 centimeters. At present the largest diabolo has a diameter of 125 centimeters and weighs more than 30 kilograms, while the smallest has a diameter of only one centimeter. Building on the traditions of diabolo making, Zhang Guoliang improved the range of products so that diabolos possess practical, fitness, entertainment, and collectible qualities. In order to pass on the craft of diabolo making, Zhang Guoliang established his own studio and frequently visits schools to teach students the technique, attracting the attention of a growing number of young people. His representative works include the Chinese Chess Diabolo, the Fuwa Diabolo, and the Dragon and Phoenix Diabolo.
