02 · Mastery & Signature Works

The bearer record for Zheng Zujie is anchored in the documented technical standards of Yongchun Boxing in Fuzhou, Fujian. Within the documented technical tradition of Yongchun Boxing in Fuzhou, Fujian: Wing Chun is one of the fist styles in the history of Chinese martial arts to have been created by a woman, and it is therefore also known as the "women's fist". Its boxing principles fully analyze the weaknesses and strengths of women, skillfully applying such principles as human mechanics, lever structures, and triangular mechanics, and precisely grasping and exploiting space; it is characterized by speed, steadiness, precision, and fierceness. Of these, "Siu Nim Tao" (Little Idea) is the introductory basic form, which mainly trains the upper, middle, and lower body to unite as one; "Chum Kiu" (Seeking Bridge) is the intermediate routine, which, on the basis of the posture and footwork of Siu Nim Tao, further refines the unity of hand, body, and step and of attack and defense; "Biu Ji" (Thrusting Fingers) is the advanced routine, taking attack as defense and advance as retreat. The myriad methods are distilled into one method, and with that one method the myriad methods are defeated. As for weapons, the Eight Slashing Knives technique takes the eight strokes of the Chinese character "yong" (eternity) — the dot, horizontal, turning, vertical, hook, lifting, left-falling, and right-falling strokes — as the target directions for attack and defense, hence the name "Yong-Character Eight Slashing Knives". The Six-and-a-Half Point Pole consists of six methods of power and staff technique — "swallowing, spitting, floating, sinking, marking, and sealing" — and "half" means slanting, referring to the measure of attack and defense with the staff. The Wing Chun wooden dummy method has 108 forms, designed so that Wing Chun disciples who have completed their training do not let their fist skills grow rusty. Wing Chun is a frame structure based primarily on triangular stress, supporting force, and applied force, and its horse stance is built on the triangle. The fist techniques are simple and plain, direct and clear: meeting change with change and overcoming hardness with cleverness. It emphasizes inch power (cun jin): power lies not in magnitude but in wholeness, and technique lies not in number but in cleverness, fully reflecting the quality of conquering clumsiness with skill and stressing practical efficiency and results. The project is dedicated to perfecting character through individual practice, attaining a breadth of mind in which benevolence is the root and courtesy the application, honoring martial virtue, being friendly to others, dealing with the world honestly and generously, and tolerating all things; this is of positive significance for building a harmonious society. Representative repertoire, works and technical entries recorded for the project include: "Little Idea": The elementary form of Wing Chun, training upper, middle and lower body as one. "Seeking the Bridge": The intermediate form, refining hand, body and step into one unity of attack and defence. "Thrusting Fingers": The advanced form, attacking as defence and advancing as retreat, in keeping with the style's principle of one method. "The eight-slash butterfly swords": The sword method named for the eight strokes of the character yong, each stroke answering one attack or defence.
