Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1922 in Yingshang, Anhui. In 1939 Wang Chuanxian became a pupil of the Yingshang flower-drum lantern artist Tang Peijin, learning the flower-drum lantern and playing lanhua under the stage name Yi Tiao Sheng (A Single Rope); he is a representative figure of the Tang school of the Yingshang flower-drum lantern. Slender in build and handsome of face, with a naturally fine voice and a lovely vocal style, he was praised by the people along the Huai River as the little bee. The flower-drum lantern dance he performed took its beauty from trembling, shaking and bouncing, like a quivering rope, and from this came his stage name. He was also adept at the roaming-field performance of the xianzi lantern; when he appeared as lanhua in a solo dance or paired with a drum frame, his various bodily methods, steps, postures and techniques were graceful and skilled at conveying feeling, while his singing was high, bright, clear and full of charm, and was deeply loved by the people. He took many pupils in Yingshang, Bengbu, Huainan and elsewhere. His representative works include Xiao Fang Niu (The Little Cowherd), Song Lang Zhi Huai He (Seeing My Husband Off to Harness the Huai River), Da Xu Zhou (Attacking Xuzhou), Tan Wu Geng (Sighing at the Five Watches) and the modern flower-drum lantern dance San Yue San (The Third Day of the Third Month).
