Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Yang Wei, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1932 in Shantou, Guangdong. He learned Yingge dance through transmission within his family. He began practising martial arts at the age of nine, had mastered the basic routines of Yingge dance by fifteen, and at eighteen became the lead dancer of a Yingge troupe, later taking charge of its coaching. He was particularly skilled at reforming and innovating the dance. Qi Xia Chui (Seven Beats of the Stick), a routine admired by dancers and audiences alike for its plain, generous manner and its blend of strength and suppleness, was devised and choreographed by Yang Wei in 1991.

Honors & Recognition

He is a national representative bearer of Yingge (Chaoyang Yingge), a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
