Zhang Wanjiu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Zhang Wanjiu, a male of Han ethnicity, was born in 1951 in Yan'an, Shaanxi. He began learning the biegu drum art from his elders at the age of nine. He is both a performer and an organizer of biegu and is recognized locally as its most representative exponent. His movements are vigorous and martial yet free and elegant; the varied postures he assumes while dancing, springing and leaping embody the plain, rugged, forceful and commanding style of Luochuan biegu.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of Luochuanbiegu, a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He has trained more than fifty biegu artists, making an important contribution to the transmission of Luochuan biegu.
