02 · Mastery & Signature Works

The bearer record for Li Zhe is anchored in the documented technical standards of Pyrography in Nanyangshiwolong, Henan. Within the documented technical tradition of Pyrography in Nanyangshiwolong, Henan: Nanyang pyrography employs the principle of carbonization. Based on the carbonization characteristics of different materials, it uses high-temperature branding tools to outline and burn designs on carbonizable materials; by controlling the temperature of the branding pen, the speed of the stroke, and the pressure applied, it makes the surface display natural gradations of pale yellow, medium yellow, brown, and black, achieving an ink effect close to the 'five shades of ink' of Chinese painting. It takes branding as the main technique and applied color as the supplement; the colors are deep and steady, with an antique air that is dignified and elegant. It emphasizes composition and modeling, giving weight to artistic conception and the use of blank space. With relief variations across the picture and differing depths of carbonization, together with the texture of the material itself, the works present a shallow-relief effect of depth and layering. The main process steps of Nanyang pyrography include composition, material selection, drafting the branding design, burning, inscribing the signature, and mounting; its techniques include flat burning, fur-tearing, and dot-texturing; its themes cover figures, landscape, and flowers and birds, with particular emphasis on auspicious subjects. Its products are highly varied, covering 18 series, 136 varieties, and over a thousand designs, including small everyday items such as chopsticks, brush pots, and handles for fly whisks; large home furnishings such as screens and furniture; and decorative items of all kinds such as wood-panel, xuan paper, and silk pyrography, each with its own representative products.
